Colorado Auto Insurance

All fifty states in the US require auto insurance coverage, to one extent or another, in order to drive a privately owned vehicle on public roadways within the state. Coverage requirements vary from one state to the next so it is very important to know what is required in the state where you live.

Colorado auto insurance is required of everyone with a home address in the state. Coverage requirements are based upon the state where you live so it’s OK to travel to or through another state without worrying about the auto insurance requirements for each state.

In Colorado auto insurance requirements are limited to liability coverage only. Other types of auto insurance coverage – comprehensive, collision, medical, and the like – are recommended but not required.

To meet state requirements, liability limits for Colorado auto insurance coverage are established at a minimum amount required. Again, additional coverage is recommended but not required.

There is a minimum of $25,000 per person required for bodily injury for all Colorado auto insurance policies. This means that your policy must allow for payment of at least $25,000 if someone is injured in an auto accident caused by your vehicle.

The minimum amount of liability required per accident (not per person) under all Colorado auto insurance policies is $50,000. This, again, is for bodily injury. It is designed to cover medical expenses incurred by one or more individuals injured in an accident in which your vehicle is determined to be the cause of the accident.

Colorado auto insurance coverage laws require a minimum limit for property damage of $15,000 per accident. This means that you must be covered for at least this amount to reimburse expenses used to repair or replace any property that was damaged when you and your vehicle are deemed responsible for causing the property damage.

Anyone who has recently moved or is planning to move to Colorado is urged to update auto insurance coverage to meet or exceed these state mandated requirements.
