Rental Car Insurance

Thank goodness and Avis that there are rental cars out there when we need them! Here in the United States we have become so dependent upon our automobiles that we are at a loss of how to go about daily life without one. That’s where the rental cars come to our rescue.

There are actually a number of reasons why a person may choose to rent a vehicle and it’s important to make sure that we and the vehicle are adequately covered with the necessary rental car insurance. But it’s not as simple as it seems.

That’s because car insurance, in general, is not as simple as it seems.

Every driver has unique needs of car insurance and every state has unique insurance minimum requirements. That means car insurance, even rental car insurance, can be confusing.

If you are on vacation, a business trip, or away from your home – and automobile – for whatever reason, you may want to rent a car for driving wherever you are. You’ll be asked if you’d like to purchase rental car insurance, too.

As a rule, your personal car insurance will cover your rental car insurance needs, too. As long as you pay for the type of insurance coverage that specifically includes rental cars.

You’ll want to purchase temporary rental car insurance coverage that will be effective during the time you are using the rental car if your personal policy does not specifically cover rental cars.

If your personal vehicle is in the shop due to repairs sustained in a collision, the issue of rental cars and rental car insurance can become a bit tricky.

Depending upon who is the liable party – who hit whom – and what type of insurance that liable party carries, rental car and rental car insurance may not be a standard, or expected, part of the repair process.

When we shop around for car insurance, most of us probably aren’t planning to spend much time renting a car. We have our own, thank you very much. But it is an issue that’s worth researching, just in case.

Might not hurt to check your current policy to make sure you – and rental car insurance – are covered the way you want to be.
